Kolkata Police arrested filmmaker Kamaleswar Mukherjee for supporting a protest against the ruling party

Shocking! Filmmaker Kamaleswar Mukherjee along with a leader from CPI(M) was detained by Kolkata police yesterday (3rd October) for supporting a protest against the ruling party (Trinamool Congress). It all started after an alleged attack on a bookstall in Rasbihari.

The filmmaker and the others were first taken to Lalbazar, but later in the evening, they were released.  The incident took social media by storm as the Tollywood film fraternity extended its support for Mukherjee.

Kamaleswar Mukherjee's colleagues from the industry have condemned the incident and expressed their views on their social media pages.

Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji wrote on Twitter, Afraid of books???? Books??? Don't have enough words of condemnation for the arrest of Dr Kamaleswar Mukherjee. With you, Kamalda, for whatever it is worth.

Has this government gone insane? The arrest of Kamaleswar Mukherjee is SHAMEFUL. For what? For a book stall? For supporting a protest against the plunder of a ‘book stall ‘? This is shameful. Strongly condemn this immensely meaningless and obnoxious act of flexing muscle power. With you Kamleshwar Mukherjee, we all need an answer for this! Actor Riddhi Sen wrote on his Facebook wall.

Kamaleswar Mukherjee after his release said that 'the police could not give a proper reason for the arrest; the police detained them saying that protests cannot be held at busy crossings as it would disrupt the movement of Durga Puja crowds'.
