Rabindra Sangeet artist Rajeshwar Bhattacharya passes away

Artist Rajeswar Bhattacharya, known for teaching and performing the songs of Rabindranath Tagore (Rabindra Sangeet), has passed away in Scotland, UK. The artist passed away at 10.06 p.m. Indian time on Friday. His death casts a shadow over the music world. 

Speaking about Rajeswar Bhattacharya, he was an exceptional, passionate, and skilled teacher of Western students, who enabled all levels from complete freshers to professional singers to enter the tradition. He also founded a music school in 1972 with internationally renowned students. He studied at Gitabitan music school with Ramesh Banerjee and Malabika Kannan in classical music.

He traveled to the UK and Europe from 1996 where he held several annual workshops with Suekali. Rajeswar Bhattacharya along with Suekali offered workshops in Scotland, London, and France, and every year they took a team to India to study raga intensively. He has numerous CDs of Tagore songs and also released a CD of Bengali songs for children based on 10 different ragas, composed in his own tunes.
