Singer Sandhya Mukherjee

Legendary Bengali singer Sandhya Mukherjee breathed her last on the evening of 15 February.  She was not very well for the last few days. She had to be hospitalized for complications related to Covid. Although she was responding to treatment, her condition worsened after she suffered a cardiac arrest. But all the efforts couldn't save her life and she breathed her last. She was 90 years old.

The veteran singer also was in news for refusing the Padma Shri award. On 26 January 2022, on Republic Day, she was awarded the Padma Shri for her performance in music. But she denied accepting the award. Her daughter Soumi Sengupta said that 'her mother declined the honor because 'To confer a Padma Shri to a legend like her at the age of 90 is extremely demeaning'. And please don't try to find out any political angles. She felt insulted. She was far beyond any politics'.

Sandhya Mukherjee was born on 4 October 1931. She started her career with a Hindi song in the film Taarana in 1950. As a playback singer, she sang in 17 Hindi films. Then she shifted to her home town Kolkata due to personal reasons where she got married to a Bengali poet named Shyamal Gupta who wrote the lyrics for many of her songs. Her collaboration with Hemanta Mukherjee became the most popular voices behind the pairings of the Bengali superstar Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. She was most notable for giving her voice over Suchitra Sen.
